Introduction

This is a proposal for an open source system tentatively called Fisheye: a way to mark up news stories on websites such as nytimes.com with embedded criticism. A bit like adding trackbacks to any news story or web page, color-coded and tied to specific bits of text within the story. Or, like a highlighter anyone can wield on any other web site.

The goal is that news consumers can be more efficiently and better informed, reading major sources of news as they wish but being aware of shortcomings in the material so that they can have a more sophisticated and better-informed understanding. medical billing and coding

The Problem

On the internet there is a wealth of information including many news stories from wire services, newspapers, magazines, and online publications. However much of the material, even from major sources such as the Associated Press and New York Times, is riddled with errors, lack of context, unchallenged statements, and unstated assumptions. There may be contradictions to earlier stories or quotes, or even to concurrent articles. There is a wealth of online media criticism evaluating this information, highlighting and correcting these shortcomings. However there is no way for a casual reader to be aware of the shortcomings in the stories they are reading. Either the reader must seek out criticism of specific articles, or regularly follow websites which engage in media criticism. Between reading the original and learning of criticism, false statements can influence people and color their reading of other stories. medical billing software

A Proposal

A web browser plugin, initially for Firefox, which embeds criticism directly into the original stories. The plugin connects to a database which links certain parts of the text to criticism of that text, and allows the user to efficiently get an overview of the criticism as well as link to the full criticism. Consumers of news simply install the plugin, and then see any relevant criticism embedded in every website they visit. The system is not based around producing original criticism, merely linking existing criticism to the material it criticizes. Media critics merely need to continue writing criticism. Readers of media criticism need only add links to the criticism from the original article, using the plugin's efficient interface. Effort is distributed and minimized, but yields great impact.

Recently, I was put in touch with ShiftSpace a platform for parallel content overlaid onto web pages. They are eager to have FishEye on top of their platform, and were just in the process of widely releasing updated API and dev docs, so I spent a few days knocking out a test FE app. It went quite well, and I did end up with a functioning tool not far from the mockup. FE requires a few changes to the SS platform, including displaying all FE notes by default, and allowing users to browse content without signing up.

You should install ShiftSpace for Firefox and give the Fisheye client a try. Follow these installation instructions. Follow the Hello World example far enough to learn how to install Spaces viz the [1] Låna 4000 kr] Then grab the laest FE test client code from here, put the Fisheye directory next to HelloWorld, and install it the same way. Reload the page and you are ready to go. FE notes are Smslån created in the same manner as other "Shifts" in SS: holding down the Shift key while moving mouse pops up a tiny menu.

The little code patch with the FE source can be applied to the ShiftSpace Console.js in order to have FE content automatically display on page load.

Luckily, there are existing open-source tools which are almost exactly what we need. They just need to be streamlined and given an RDF vocabulary specific to media criticism. Contrary to lots of the Fisheye notes, annotations are added through the plugin itself, so there is no web page required.

Annotea for the database. Annozilla is the Firefox plugin. You can install and run Annozilla right now, then grab the code and hack away! There is an annotea server running you can use for tests, but the simplest option is to use "local server" which stores data locally.

You should install Annozilla for Firefox and give it a try. Follow these installation instructions, using the "local server" option when configuring. View->Sidebar->Annozilla to open the sidebar, highlight some text in a web page and add a comment via the Annotations dropdown on the sidebar, reload the page.

Plugin Test 1: Annozilla customized with a set of categories specific to media criticism (see Categories Of Criticism). This means extending the RDF and tweaking the GUI. Unknown whether the available annotea test server supports arbitrary RDF, so it might be necessary to configure and run our own. See a more detailed task list here.

Plugin Test 2: Incorporate the cleaner rendering and interface from Annotools. This implementation is less obtrusive and closer to the mockup.

Plugin Test 3: Further interface improvements. Start adding extra info such as ratings, sources, channels, filters. Unclear if annotea supports extra info. Might be necessary to customize it or run a parallel database

If you can help with part of the system, create a page about that part of the system and start laying out the steps. Probably want sourceforge project for the software side of things, maybe message board for discussion, eventually a proper website.

For now this section of the WIKI will be primary place to organize and update.

Geoff Matters - I conceived this, but I don't have the skill set to make it happen. I'm trying to rally people to the cause, give the project its own momentum, then bow out and let others complete it. I've given a lot of thought to this project, I'm happy to be part of initial design discussions, and to help organize until the project gets on its feet.

Alex Roper - I'm interested in working on a browser plugin to integrate with the system. I have some minimal experience with Firefox plugins, but not a huge amount. I am, however, very busy at the moment.

Eric Redlinger - Also very busy (aren't we all?) but can offer design and implementation critique and certainly a lot of active testing when the system gets running. I'm also a daily NYT online reader...

Adam Kendall - Interested in database design.

Keiko Uenishi - I'm not a programmer nor designer, however, I can be a good tester/debugger.

Lucy Mendel - Programmer. Django, jquery, python, php, MySql, Java, C++, etc. Let's make guerilla commenting and web grafitti (bafitti) and 3rd party news critiquing and inline commenting commonplace and useful.

Open Comments

What license are you planning on releasing the code (if any) under. This will make a huge difference for many people. I myself, for example, wouldn't be willing to work on a project like this (for free) if it were under a propriatary license. I'd suggest GPL, LGPL, or BSD, though there are plenty of other free licenses out there. Alexr 22:25, 7 February 2007 (IST)

Definitely open source of some type, I would prefer to leave license up to the people who write the code. Hopefully there can be amicable agreement on the specific license. I will edit this page to make it clear that this would be an open-source project. Thanks! Geoff 22:52, 7 February 2007 (IST)
